In welcome news for company office holders (directors and secretaries), Australia’s corporate regulator, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has advised that company extracts purchased through the ASIC website will no longer contain the residential address of company officeholders.
ASIC advises: “ASIC implemented this change in response to broader privacy and safety concerns including the potential to access personal information, heightened concerns around personal safety and to reduce the risk of identity theft and cyber-crime. This change is a sensible precaution that balances the need to reduce easily accessible personal information while maintaining effective and transparent registers. This action does not remove residential address information entirely but introduces a barrier at the most widely available access point.”
Company officers must disclose name, date and place of birth, residential address and director identification number to ASIC, so removing the address from publicly available information may help protect directors from possible identity theft.
